Morio Muscat

Morio Muscat

The white grape variety Morio Muscat was bred by Peter Morio in 1928. Morio, who worked at the Geilweilerhof Institute for Grapevine Breeding, claimed that Silvaner and Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) were the parents of the cross. However, this did not stand up to DNA analyses carried out in 2012.

Silvaner was crossed with Gelber Muskateller. The muscat flavour that can almost always be tasted in the wines makes this very easy to understand, even without DNA analysis. Single-varietal vinification produces interesting white wines. From ripe grapes, the variety delivers the typical ‘Morio flavour’ with a nutmeg note that is not overly perfumed and a strong acidity. The wines also have an aroma reminiscent of lemon or elderflower.

One of the samples in the glass contains about 0.1; with five wine samples, that adds up to half a litre. That’s why the guided wine tastings we host include plenty of mineral water (still, medium, sparkling – whichever the guest prefers).
