2020 vintage – early and frost-affected

2020 began in the Saale-Unstrut region with a warm, sunny spring and an unusually early budbreak. The vines began to flower as early as the end of May – but on 12 May, a late frost caused severe damage. As a result, some vineyards lost a significant proportion of their yield. Following this setback, the growing season continued under rather dry conditions. The ripening of the grapes varied considerably, making careful selection in the vineyard particularly important. The harvest in Saale-Unstrut began as early as mid-September, significantly earlier than usual. The result was a vintage with a small yield but excellent quality: characteristic of a year in which the winegrowers had to demonstrate a great deal of patience and even greater discernment.
