2026 wine vintage on the Saale and Unstrut rivers

The 2026 wine year in the Saale-Unstrut region stands out as a historic milestone and an exceptional vintage. Following a wet spring, an extremely hot summer brought the region smaller grapes, but also perfectly healthy, highly aromatic grapes. 

This led to a record-breaking early start to the harvest in the first week of September. The year 2026 will also be remembered for the fact that the newly crowned German Wine Queen hails from the Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region, bringing the highest German wine honour back to the region for the first time in 32 years. It was about time.

In terms of quality, 2026 could turn out to be a very good to outstanding vintage, particularly for vineyards harvested early and in favourable locations. Whether it will actually be a ‘great vintage’ cannot yet be definitively assessed at the end of September – the final weeks of the harvest, acidity and must weight levels, and the work in the cellar will be decisive.
