Kerner
This grape variety was bred in 1929 by August Herold at the State Teaching and Research Centre in Weinsberg. Trollinger was crossed with Riesling. It was named after the Weinsberg poet, doctor and wine lover Justinus Kerner (1786-1862).
Previously, Kerner was called Weißer Herold after the breeder. The grape variety was later renamed Kerner in reference to Justinus Kerner, who had lived in Weinsberg. During his lifetime, Justinus Kerner became famous for his research into food poisoning. Let's leave it at that.
The white Kerner grape variety is considered a close relative of Riesling. As a late harvest, Kerner is strong, rather round and nutty than characterised by acidity, sometimes with a subtle muscat tone. Lighter wines with higher acidity levels are then strongly reminiscent of Riesling.
